Can CBD cure or prevent Diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus is a disease that occurs when the metabolism of your body is not in harmony with the insulin levels. The insulin controls your blood sugars and hence, due to the inappropriate flow of it, the blood sugar levels increase. This chronic disease which has affected more than 400 million people worldwide causing 1.6 million deaths every year has more than a single type. Yes, there are four major types of Diabetes.

  1. TYPE 1

Here, our pancreas just cannot produce enough insulin for the blood sugars to be leveled, and therefore, hyperglycemia is a constant condition seen in patients who are suffering from this type.

For people with Type 1 diabetes, The Diabetes Council research has found that CBD can reduce the occurrence and delay the onset of the disease. Furthermore, the THC enzyme has been found to suppress the autoimmune response of the disease, reducing the amount of insulin needed during treatment.

  1. TYPE 2

Under this type, the body produces insulin but is also resistant towards it. Even though the body has insulin, our blood sugar levels increase as the metabolism is not able to break it down and let it flow with the blood.

People suffering from Type 2 diabetes that use CBD may fix an endocannabinoid imbalance that makes it harder for people to lose weight, which is an important step in treating Type 2. And, CBD may also help reduce insulin resistance, the crucial mechanism that causes the disease to progress.

Here, an individual’s blood sugar levels are on the borderline which means higher than the normal (120-125 mg/dl) but lower than the diabetic type 2 readings (=<130)

This is a phenomenon seen in pregnant women when the placenta produces hormones that do not really allow insulins to do their job.

There are several ways to control diabetes. From oral medication to insulin injectables, allopathic medicines have been playing their part in the world. Unfortunately, there has not been a definite cure for diabetes in this field. But some studies have shown that a substance called CBD can help in lowering the risk of this disease in prediabetic patients and can also reduce the insulin requirements in type 1 and type 2 patients.

According to, research conducted implies that the use of cannabis may help with stabilising blood sugars, preventing nerve inflammation, lowering blood pressure over time, keeping blood vessels opened and improving circulation. Research has also found that cannabinoids may be more effective than existing diabetes medication

Let us understand a little about CBD, Shall we?

Cannabidiol, commonly called CBD, is a chemical found in the Cannabis plant. It can be extracted either from Marijuana or Hemp. While marijuana has more THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) than CBD, hemp turns out to be a better option for extraction. Although both hemp and marijuana come from the same family, Cannabaceae, hemp continues to be the safest option for CBD oil extraction.

The basic difference between Hemp and Marijuana is that the Cannabis type that contains THC amount equal or less than 0.3% qualifies to be called as Hemp. It is more often grown for industrial usage. The variety of this plant that contains more than 0.3% of THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) falls into the category of marijuana.

This simply means that CBD is an intoxicating compound which means the “I am HIGH” won’t be there unless you consume THC.

Honestly, CBD is the innocent compound of the Cannabis team as it does not give you any psychoactive effects.

In the past couple of years, the demand for CBD products has reached great heights. As a lot of researches have shown their medicinal uses and positive results in patients, companies are willing to buy more and more of this substance.

Various diseases can be treated with the help of CBD. Some of them are Epilepsy (Seizures Disorder), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Anxiety, Pain, and a muscle disorder called Dystonia.

The biggest mountain that this chemical substance climbed was its positive effects for diabetes treatment.

Yes, you read that right.

The Diabetes Council Research and the American Alliance for Medical Cannabis (AAMC) found the various good deeds that CBD Oil can do especially for the ones suffering from Diabetes.

Cannabidiol does not only delay the occurrence of the disease but can also help in reducing the body’s resistance to insulin which helps in treating both (1 & 2) types of diabetes.

It can reduce the cramps caused by muscle pain and in fact, treats the restless leg syndrome which leads to continuous unbearable pain in the legs of the patient.

There are three types of spectrums to choose from,

  1. Full-Spectrum CBD Oil

This is the form of oil which we can call out as ‘raw and real’ because this type contains CBD, THC and other flavors and components present in the plant.

  1. Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil

This is the innocent-refined version of Full-spectrum as the THC extract is removed in this type but the other cannabinoids are still present. The only difference is the absence of THC.

  1. Isolated CBD Oil

This is the most filtered form of cannabidiol oil as no other cannabinoids or flavors present in the cannabis plant are present. It is refined after extraction so that only the specific substance can be used.

The best CBD oil to choose if you have diabetes is one that has been produced by a known company, that has also been verified by a third-party lab testing company. Another advise experts give is to stay away from and added ingredients, artificial flavourings, artificial dyes, added sugars or other ingredients such as melatonin.

People have been trying their own ways to use these oils for the treatment of Diabetes. Namely:

  • Vaping
  • eating edible gummies
  • consuming pills/capsules of the CBD oil
  • applying the oil and tinctures
  • using the skin creams and lotions that contain CBD oil

CBD oils also indirectly helps you to fight with diabetes, for example if it helps you in getting deep sleep your body will even out. CBD can keep you more balanced, you can wake up easier, get warmed up for sports/fitness easier, recover from workouts quicker and as a result keeps you in a better mood.

Lastly, before starting any sort of treatment yourself, please consult your therapist as this is not just a regular salt that can be taken with little or no guidance. Various brands are serving a variety of CBD products and the one that suits you best should be determined only by someone who has complete knowledge on the topic.
